Why John Michael Gyllenborg Could be Latest TE “Freak”
Although the Wyoming Cowboys’ tight end John Michael Gyllenborg played only four games of organized football as a senior in high school, and had modest numbers in college (80/1,023/7), it’s pure athleticism that has brought him here.
The former basketball player has been recorded as having a 10’08” broad jump (the same as legendary Vernon Davis), a 37″ vertical (Davis 43″), and a top speed maxing out around 19.5 MPH (Davis 21.4). This is not a player comp, as Davis is widely regarded as having the greatest combine performance of any position in history. Gyllenborg can’t sniff Davis’ 33 reps in the bench press or ludicrous 4.38 40-time.
However, that’s comparing the Wyoming TE to an athletic anomaly. The fact remains that although his game is unpolished, most of Gyllenborg’s physicality measurements dwarf those of some successful tight ends in the league.
Despite his previous small stature, Gyllenborg has added 26(!) pounds to his frame. With the added weight and recent return from injury, teams will be dialed in to see if he can maintain the aforementioned numbers and get his 40 time under 4.60, which could push him up the board quickly, as teams are quick to fall in love with freakish physicality.
The Green Bay Packers have an interest, and the Chiefs, in particular, are enamored with his movement after the catch and 2.65 YPRR, making the hometown kid a perfect padawan to Jedi Master Kelce.
